How to use
Type your trip distance, your vehicle's combined MPG (most 2024–2025 cars land between 25 and 35 mpg; large SUVs and trucks closer to 20), and the local price per gallon or litre. Press Calculate for the total, the gallons needed, and — if you split the ride — the cost per passenger. A typical compact car at 30 mpg and $3.50/gal burns about $35 per 300 miles.
Air conditioning, roof racks, and a heavy foot can cut real-world economy by 10–20%, so pad the estimate for summer road trips.
FAQ
How is the fuel cost calculated?
Cost equals (distance ÷ MPG) × price per gallon. The calculator normalizes kilometres to miles and L/100 km to MPG before multiplying, and doubles everything for a round trip.
Why does my car get worse mileage than the estimate?
EPA combined figures are lab averages. Real driving with AC, hills, cold weather, and city stops usually lands 10–20% below the sticker number.
Can I split the cost with passengers?
Yes. Set the passenger count and the result shows a per-person share of the total fuel bill.
Does this work outside the US?
Yes. Switch distance to kilometres and efficiency to L/100 km (or price to $/litre); the math converts automatically.
